Web15 Nov 2024 · You can set timing with a vacuum gauge connected to manifold vacuum if your cam isn't too radical. With the engine at idle, advance the timing until you get the highest reading, then retard the distributor until the reading drops off about 1 inch. The old mechanic I learned this from (about 40 years ago) swore by it. Or you can do it by ear.
