In a complete discrete valuated field of characteristic zero with perfect residue field of prime characteristic a pairing with values in the group of primary elements is defined. It is proved that this pairing agrees with the Hilbert norm residue symbol and therefore provides an explicit formula for the latter.

Hilbert's norm residue symbol logically pertains to the theory of quadratic forms and lattices, and to that of quadratic fields and their norm equations. We express it here for its relevance to determining conditions for the existence of local points on conics over Q.

WebD. Hilbert defined and investigated norm residue symbol, which now it is called the Hilbert symbol. The connection of Hilbert's symbol and of local Artin map is given for the local field [2]. In mathematics, the Hilbert symbol or norm-residue symbol is a function (–, –) from K× × K× to the group of n th roots of unity in a local field K such as the fields of reals or p-adic numbers .
